Liminal moments are times when you can feel a change but aren't sure what's next. Like those Fall days when you perceive a change to the weather but aren't sure exactly when/how it will happen.
Product design is in one of these liminal places right now. We all know AI will change things but we're exactly sure. We don't even know if we're going from good times to worse times (Fall) or from a time that is noticeable worse than what the future might become.
It's fueling a lot of fear and dialogue about the winds of change but not enough about how to design this future place we're invariably heading towards. We know that all creative fields and data-centred fields will change. But we're not sure each of our places in that future.
I hope we can host more dialogues about how to design that future and specifically the design of AI. We'll be starting a podcast soon to tackle these topics and welcome any topics, questions, invitations to get involved.
- What kind of AI-assisted products do we want?
- How can we ensure they retain the accessible and human-centred capabilities that we've spent two decades building into the web?
- How can we build AI products that improve not only business outcomes but community needs?
